We will all go through writing a business letter at least once in our lifetime. It does not matter if you are an employee, an owner, a stay_at_home mom (or dad) that has her own business at home; we all have to go through writing it. It cannot be avoided!
2. Don't be reluctant to add a headline to your cover letter format. It will put you in a class by yourself. And because it's unusual, a headline can improve the attention your cover letter gets. Your headline should speak to the recruiter's needs, not yours. After all, it's a headline for a cover letter, not a resume objective. So, try "Experienced in Restructuring Loan Portfolios for Rapid Rebounds in Slow Economies" instead of "Talented Go_getter Seeking Work". Only mention yourself if you have some remarkable capability or accomplishment that clearly translates to the new company. So, for instance, "Everyone Said They Were Trouble Makers, But I Turned Them Around" is also relevant when you follow it with a short story that illustrates benefits you can add for the hiring company.
